Criteria for Excellence in Artistic Expression

Criteria for Excellence remain the same across Division levels
In each Division students strive for understanding progressively more complex concepts and skills
with progressively more initiative, autonomy, and awareness.

A Holistic Rubric for Division 1 (7th and 8th grade level work)
appears  following the Criteria for Excellence.
Division 2 and Division 3 rubrics are created for each assignment using the Criteria for Excellence as guidelines.


Preparation

• You develop your own message. (Note: The message could be the medium.)
• You use an art form (visual art, music, dance/movement, drama, writing, other) that communicates your message.
• You research your message and art form and apply it to your process.
• You gather the materials you need.
• You plan your process.

Presentation

• Your art work has an impact on its audience.
• You use the techniques of your art form effectively.
• You can answer questions about your art work and process.

Process

• You plan and manage your time effectively.
• Your plan is open to inspiration and suggestion.
• You complete your plan.
• You get feedback from others.
• You revise as necessary.
• You reflect on your art work, process, and presentation.

 

HOLISTIC RUBRIC FOR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION, DIVISION 1

Just Beginning

• Your work has limited impact on its audience.
• Your work shows little evidence of a message or thought in your choice of an art form or medium.
• Your work shows little evidence that you researched your ideas, your art form, and the techniques of your art form.
• You show little evidence of having considered the suggestions of other people or of being open to change in your artistic process.
• You have not described or reflected on your artistic process.
• Your techniques get in the way of your purpose or do not show care in their execution.

Approaches Division 1 Standards

• Your work has some impact on its audience.
• Your work shows some evidence of a message, and some thought in your choice of an art form or medium.
• Your work shows some evidence that you researched your ideas, your art form, and the techniques of your art form.
• You show some evidence of having considered the suggestions of other people and of remaining open to change throughout your artistic process.
• You have some problems describing and reflecting on your artistic process.
• Your techniques often do not work toward your purpose or do not show care in their execution.

Meets Division 1 Standards ("Yes, and . . . " or "Yes, but . . .")

• Your work has an impact on its audience.
• You have developed your own message and chosen an art form or medium that suits it.
• Your work shows evidence that you researched your ideas, your art form, and the techniques of your art form.
• You have considered the suggestions of other people and have remained open to change throughout your
artistic process.
• You describe and reflect on your artistic process.
• Your techniques work toward your purpose and show care in their execution.

Exceeds Division 1 Standards ("Yes!")

• Your work has a strong impact on its audience.
• You show unusual insight, complexity, originality, or creativity in your message or your choice of an art form or medium to express it.
• Your work shows rich evidence that you researched your ideas, your art form, and the techniques of your art form.
• You have shown especially thoughtful responsiveness to the suggestions of other people and have remained open to change throughout your artistic process.
• You describe and reflect on your artistic process with exceptional insight or thoughtfulness.
• You use sophisticated or subtle techniques to achieve your purpose and show exceptional care in their execution.
