CAN  YOU  HELP?

Jason Cook’s Eagle Project
Hello Parker community, I am currently working on my Boy Scout Eagle project.  For my project I am building wall mountable display cases that will be given to Parker.  They will be to display paper work, announcements and other flat(ish) objects.  The cases will be constructed out of wood and tempered safety glass doors with tracks and a lock. They will be finished with stain and have cork backing to stick thumbtacks into.  If you are interested in a list of supplies I need please e-mail me at: jason.cook23@verizon.net or call (978) 486-3547 (preferably e-mail).

Are there any masons out there?  We are having a little problem with the brick wall at the handicap entrance to the building, beside the library.  If you can help please contact David Babineau at (978) 772-3293.  Thank you very much.

Desperately seeking service students - Directed Studies needs service student Monday and Friday 1.1 and also Tuesday 2.1.  The 7th graders need ‘older sister and brother types’ to help them revise and stay focused.  Please see Lee.

John Bohannon is looking for ONE MORE record player so that he can use the turntable for motion experiments.  Does anyone have any they would be willing to donate to the school?

ATTENTION 10th AND 11th GRADERS!

If you are interested in becoming a Peer Mentor for the '04 -'05 school year or would like to learn more about the program, please join us for an information meeting on Thursday, May 27.  Lunch-time in Room 26.

*** You will have the opportunity to ask questions of current mentors and to pick up an application.***

DIVISION  III  UPDATE

Most students are working on their final projects and revisions as the year winds to a close.  Seniors have a final deadline for all new work next Wednesday, May 26.  This week’s class updates are from Amy Adams’ MST classes:

In Amy's classes:

Financial Math:  Students are wrapping up the final unit of the semester which is on Planning for Retirement.  They will soon be reviewing the work of the semester and compiling it into their final project:  a detailed plan of money management, and a financial future that includes a monthly budget, investment and saving options, purchasing a house, and retirement savings.

PreCalculus:  Students have recently studied sequences and series leading up to the idea that adding up an infinite amount of positive numbers can actually equal a finite number!  The material of the course at this point in the year is leading up to concepts useful for calculus such as limits and infinity.  The semester will wrap up with a brief

look at inductive proof.

Junior Retreat (June 15-17)

On Tuesday, June 15 through Thursday, June 17, we will be taking the Parker Junior Advisories on a three-day, two-night retreat to the Vermont Academy (VA) Campus in Saxtons River, Vermont (about an hour and forty-five minutes from Parker).  This will be an opportunity for these students, who next year will be seniors and the oldest students in the school, to spend some time together as a group away from the inherent distractions of the school environment.  The activities we will engage in while there are intended to provide natural opportunities for students to come together as a group and begin to form a sense of community within the soon-to-be senior class.

We will be looking for parent volunteers to drive students to and from Vermont, as well as people who can lend us camping gear for the trip (especially tents).

Parents/Guardians of students in junior advisories should have received a packet of information about the trip from your student earlier this week.  If you did not receive that packet, please ask your student about it or stop by the office to pick one up.

There will be a mandatory informational meeting for parents/guardians about this trip on Wednesday, June 2 at 6:15 p.m.  (Please stay for Café Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.!)

ARTS AND HUMANITIES (A/H)

Division I A/H

Students are grooving their way through 60's music with a variety of activities.  Be sure to sing or even hum a few songs, and see if your students can name those tunes!

HELP!!! We URGENTLY request that students return their permission slips and money for the field trip to the DeCordova Museum next Wednesday, May 26.  PLEASE,PLEASE be sure to have your student bring in that form.  If you need another copy, it is posted on the Parker website, too.

June gatewaying students....keep that work rolling in.  Don't forget that the cover letters and cover slips need to be completed and the portfolios put together...even if all of the revisions are done!

Division II A/H

Division II students are wrapping up their final day of standardized testing today. When not testing, students have been busy putting together gateway projects or preparing for their first Literature Circle Discussion meeting.  Students working on gateway projects should be 80% finished by the end of next week. We will begin scheduling the oral reviews a week from Monday.  Students working on our Literature Circle Project should be working to demonstrate initiative, complexity and awareness as they manage preparing for and leading a series of academic discussions in small groups about the novel they selected. Each group will present what they have discovered about their novel so far in a presentation late next week.

MATH, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (MST) UPDATE

Division I MST

Students should continue to revise work as needed, especially if planning a June gateway.

Those planning a June gateway should have already handed in a letter of intent addressed to their assessor.  They will receive a red light or a green light to set a gateway date.  If they get the green light then they should receive from their assessor a packet of papers describing the process, including guidelines for writing a Gateway Portfolio Cover Letter.  Division I gateways will be during the days of Tuesday, June 1 – Friday, June 4.

COW #17 is for all other students.  It is a Year End Portfolio Cover Letter and Reflection.  It will be handed out on

May 18 and is due on May 28.

Division II MST

Since Monday, May 3 students have been working on YEP (Year End Projects) and Gateway Projects during school time. By Thursday, May 6, students should have finalized their project proposals in both math and science.

Students need to spend at least one hour at home on these projects each night.  Students should use the Planning Backwards sheets and calendars to help with time management. YEP in both science and math are due on June 4, 2004.

Gatewayers should have their written project complete by Friday, May 28 and be ready for Oral Reviews for the week of June 1. Students should also be working on revisions (dates vary by class). Additionally, Gateway candidates should be working on polishing up their portfolios based on the April 30 letters from their teachers.

SPANISH  UPDATE

Emily and Damara's classes are finishing up their scrapbook projects.  Students will present their projects next week and prepare for the gateways which will take place the weeks of June 1st and June 7th.

WELLNESS

This week in Alan's classes:

In Alan's classes, we created a new game that combines Capture the Flag and Manhunt.  We call it “Capture the Manhunt.”  We also played ultimate Frisbee and a game called 500.  In Health class, most students have handed in their

final piece of work on loss and grieving.  Due to MCAS, we did not have a Health class this week.

This week in Deborah’s classes:

This week in Deborah's Wellness classes we have been enjoying the spring weather on the softball diamond.  In Health classes, students completed a coping inventory.  They were able to look at 38 behaviors, assess whether they engage in them during times of stress or loss.  We then had an open discussion as to which behaviors were supportive to their overall health.  There are still a few students who have not turned in their final project, please check in with your child.  Please remind your children to bring water and sunscreen to class.

This week in Laura's classes:

In Laura's classes this week, students were able to throw the javelin, practice the high and long jumps and try throwing the shot put.  We also played a game of "Capture the Manhunt."  Next week, we will begin playing softball.  There was no Health class this week due to MCAS testing.  Unit projects were due on Thursday, May 14, so please remind your child to turn in their letter if they have not yet.
