Friday Announcement Archives

Dear Parker Families,

"We won! We won! We actually won! Hey Anthony…. Can you believe that?" Even if I had wanted to block out the sound of that particular entrance to the school building on Tuesday evening at about 6:45, I would not have been able to do so. Sitting around the conference table in the Principal’s office in the thick of a Finance Committee meeting, my attention was immediately taken by the jubilance and amazement and pride of that basketball player, and then by the chorus of voices as the teammates swarmed in the hall to relive their moment. There was a great story being committed to a collective memory, being cemented through a shared re-telling in the archive of their team. I wasn’t part of the story, but I won’t forget the feeling of being witness to this energy.

Students have said, through the recent survey regarding Athletics at Parker, that they play sports for the experience of being part of a team, collaborating for a common goal, physical fitness and healthy living, and to experience healthy competition. While its true that winning is an important goal for team members, it is within the context of learning, building skill, and practicing the rules of fair play that winning is meaningful to Parker students. The real meaning of the moment in the hallway the other night resides somewhere deep inside the confluence of all that "stuff"; that moment was about getting something right, about putting it all together and finding that interdependence and hard work, and a sense of direction and hope could lead to an undeniable sense of accomplishment.

As a school, we’re deep into the season of hard work and the potential for great things to happen. Division 1 students completed gateways this week with their classmates, teachers, and family members bearing witness to the growth and accomplishments of the past two years. Division 2 students will gateway next week in three domains, and will take their places in Division 3 classes beginning the following Monday. Seniors are preparing to dig into the homestretch of their high school experience, beginning internships, structuring release time, and mining their last courses for the final pieces of work to be accepted for graduation portfolios. All around the school there’s a heightened sense of collective support and of mutual congratulation. We are forging another chapter in our community where we publicly acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of our students and the support and energy they have received from those who witness their victories.

The life of our school relies on so many intricate interconnections among and between students and teachers and families. Candid conversations about student progress, conferences that squarely assess student goals and achievements, identify struggles and attach possibilities to help students address and overcome those struggles are part of the everyday life of our school. Collections of experiences about the different ways gateways can look, different shapes for projects and other demonstrations of mastery, and exploring the range of student achievement are essential aspects of our work together. We’re in the heart of our academic year, and it’s hard work. Students are clustering in hallways to plan presentations, rehearse or debrief important schoolwork, and prepare for what’s next. This is what our school looks like these days: something between the intensity of a game without a clock and the sustained rigor of a long, important practice.

It’s easy to tell who wins in a basketball game- the numbers say it all. There’s a blissful simplicity in that. And yet there’s something a scoreboard inevitably leaves out of its verdict. There’s a chance that the hard line of a final score can’t communicate the spirit with which the students played, or the obstacles they overcame to even reach the floor. As we gather these days to celebrate the academic achievements of our students, we enter the arena already knowing the score.

We win. We win!

Here’s to a warm and wonderful weekend,

Teri Schrader

Attention Families of Students New to Parker!

Since your child is attending the Parker Charter School, a decision was made by your family to not have your child attend the local public high school in your town of residence. As a parent of a seventh grader at Parker, I too have chosen to associate with a school setting different than what is available in Acton, where I live.

I am a graduate student in the field of education at Antioch New England Graduate School, (Keene, NH.), and am interested in why families make such a choice and once they do, what experiences unfold for them and their child as the school year progresses. To begin collecting data for my project, I will be mailing out parent surveys early next week.

I hope you will take some time to express your thoughts by answering the survey and returning it to me as soon as possible. I greatly appreciate your participation. I will be sharing my findings with staff at Parker as they are always interested in what can be done to make each student's transition to this school community a smooth and successful one. I look forward to reading your comments. Debbie Kay

Help!!!

Wanted: Thoughtful individuals to talk about their religious faith. Jim Nehring and Katie Oliviero are looking for followers of various faith traditions to speak to their Division Three World Religions class sometime during the spring semester. We are looking for followers/practitioners of Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism who could speak honestly about their faith and answer student questions. If you are interested in exploring this possibility or know someone who might be, please contact either of us at jim@parker.org  or katieo@parker.org .

Thank you!

Chaperones needed for a field trip with the junior class to tour the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Hampshire College (both) on January 29th. Please contact Sue Whalley if you'd like to join us for a fun and informative adventure! swhalley@parker.org or 978-772-3293

We are in need of VHS blank tapes again, if you can help us with this we would be most grateful.

DIVISION III UPDATE

Classes are winding down for the end of the semester, (Friday, January 24), so you should see students working on final projects and final revisions for their classes at this point. Second semester begins Monday, January 27. Students have their new schedules at this point, so we encourage you to ask them about what they will be taking next semester. You can find a full listing of course descriptions and the schedule on the Div 3 portion of the Parker website (www.parker.org). We will not have class updates for this week or next week given the imminent close of these classes.

On Wednesday, January 29, Division Three students will be operating under a special schedule. Juniors will be attending a college trip to UMASS Amherst and Hampshire College with Sue Whalley and some parent volunteers. We recommend this trip for all juniors, even if these two specifics colleges do not interest them, as it allows them to get a sense of what college looks like and what one does when touring a campus. Juniors all have permission slips with more details for you. Please return them as soon as possible. On this same day, seniors will be given a release day to work on their senior projects. All seniors will be required to submit a proposal for how they will spend this day (e.g., doing interviews, visiting a necessary research site, going to the library, working out internship details, etc.) and then be required to show evidence of thoughtful use of this day on Thursday. We will be seeking parental signatures on these release plans so that you will know where you student plans to be. Any juniors or senior who will not be participating in the two plans above will be expected to be at school, in a dedicated work/study room for the day.

As of Monday, 1/27, Juniors are eligible for off campus privileges. The forms that parents need to sign (as well as a description of the program) are on their way home. A student must have parental permission to leave campus during school hours, and it is your prerogative as to whether you wish to grant your child these privileges or not.

ARTS & HUMANITIES (AH) UPDATE

Division I A/H

Congratulations to all mid-year gatewayers - Kyle Reeves, Chris Reeves, Pearl Jurist-Schoen, Ted Sisk, Chris Hill, Sasha White, Tom Sullivan, Paul Conant, David Mann, Shelley Danko, Emily Lindbeck and Mireille Nollet!

Classes are continuing their journey through South African history and Somehow Tenderness Survives while also taking some time to reflect on the first half of the year and their portfolios.

Students should also be reading their South Africa choice book - their written assignment on the book is due Monday, January 27.

Division II A/H

Students this week continue their research papers. After much hard work, final drafts are due on Tuesday, January 21. We finished the week with a look at the "I Have a Dream" speech, and we hope all have a restful and thoughtful weekend. Next week students will culminate the unit by developing a reflective group oral presentation. We commend everyone on their hard work and diligence – enjoy the weekend!

MATH, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (MST) UPDATE

Division I MST

This week, as with last week, our MST classes have been investigating weather indicators and the atmospheric factors that create them. Division I students have been investigating weather relationships using data from their weather journal, which each student has been filling with data for almost one month, now.

Challenge of the Week (COW) #9 is called the weather journal and requires of students that they demonstrate an understanding of the measures of central tendency ("averages") by analyzing temperature data and the data describing a weather relationship of their choice (see list of ten choices on purple COW handout). This COW is due today, Friday, January 17th.

As we approach the end of the semester students and parents should note that there are various ways that we measure students' satisfactory progress. They include: the demonstration of habits of learning, especially collaboration, organization, attentiveness, and involvement; the timely completion of assignments at the minimum level of "just

beginning/approaches" for 7th graders and "approaches/meets" for 8th graders; the practice of regularly revising work that is not at an appropriate level; and, of course, the respectful treatment of others. This might be a good time of year to review the student's Personal Learning Plan (PLP) at home to recall those practical strategies that will help ensure their progress.

Division II MST

Oceanography and Erosion classes are flowing along! In erosion, we have focused on two of the four main types of erosion, these being glaciers and water. In Oceanography, students made wave tanks and looked at the effect of erosion on beaches, as well as how the moon effects the tides. Students will be working on in-class projects all of next week. These will be presented Monday January 27th, the start of the new semester. Students should be working on both Math and Science revisions.

SPANISH UPDATE

Melodie's classes have been working with a Puerto Rican salsa song called "Prepara" - practicing verb conjugations, asking questions about the 'characters' in the song, and doing a Listening Project.

Margarita's 7th grade students are learning vocabulary related to body parts. They are writing descriptions of each other using their recently learned active vocabulary.

Margarita's 8th grade students have completed a listening project using an authentic piece of "Salsa" music. Students will begin the preterit tense and watch a movie in Spanish entitled "Nueva York".

David's students have just completed an authentic listening project based on the "Salsa" song "Prepara". Students will begin to view a Spanish movie entitled "Nueva York".

Damara's students have just completed an authentic listening project based on the "Salsa" song "Prepara". Students will begin to view a Spanish movie entitled "Nueva York". Students have begun a grammar unit on the preterit tense. Students must complete their diary log for Tuesday!

Dharma's students had a dance experience of merengue to learn what they would be dancing in the crowds of Santo Domingo. Many samples of Latin music and Dominican music were played so kids could define and compare.

*Next week there will be another assessment, based on a visual aid.

*Cultural journals on the Dominican Republic were due after nearly four weeks of work.

Emily's Division II students completed grammar work on the preterit tense and are moving ahead to the future tense.

Emily's Division III students are looking more at "Salome's" poems are they continue to read.

WELLNESS UPDATE

Alan’s Wellness Classes

In Alan's classes, students worked on their substances project in the library. Due to cold weather, we stayed inside on Tuesday instead of sledding and most classes viewed part of the movie "28 Days". This movie is about the story of a woman who ends up in rehab due to her abuse of alcohol. We will finish this film next week and follow up with discussion questions. On Thursday, students continued play with prisoner dodge-ball.

Also, I am looking for parent volunteers who may be able to assist with cross-country skiing on Tuesday or Thursday. Please contact me if you would consider this.

Deborah’s Wellness Classes

This week in Deborah's classes we are continuing our basketball module, some students are organizing into teams, others are developing their skills. Tuesdays have become an opportunity for students to pick up a game of ping-pong or spend the time getting some work done. This has worked out well. Thursday, students returned to the library to continue their work on the substance unit research projects.

Colin’s Wellness Classes

This week is in Colin's Wellness classes, we continued to enjoy the snow with sledding on Thursday. On Friday we played floor hockey for the first time this winter. Next week on Thursday we will take a break from the cold, and play floor hockey in the gym, and continue with basketball on Friday at the sports arena.

Katie’s Wellness Classes

This week in Katie's Wellness class we spent our Health class researching the group substance use projects in the Library. The students are progressing well on these projects and should start to plan out their project presentations which will occur in February. Next week we will be using the movie "28 Days" as a text to explore some of the intricacies and implications of addiction.

FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE

The Nurse’s Office is in need of tissues, cough drops, throat lozenges and saltine crackers to handle the demands of the cold and flu season. Thanks for anything you can donate!

Until we get the food service program at Parker in full operation, snack items for forgotten lunches would also be appreciated. Thanks for your support!

FROM THE HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL

A Reminder: The next HAC meeting is scheduled for February 6, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 1. Agenda items will include an overview of the Wellness Sexuality Education Unit, an update on the pilot program for the school’s new food service program and a discussion concerning "competitive foods" offered at Parker. A reminder that all community members are welcome to attend. For more information, please contact Mary Ann Gapinski at the school.

FROM THE ATHLETIC ADVISORY COUNCIL

A Reminder: The initial meeting of the newly formed Athletic Advisory Council (AAC) is scheduled for Tuesday, January 21st at 7:00 p.m. in Room 1. The mission of this group, facilitated by Parker Athletic Director, Ben Benoit and Wellness Athletic Liaison, Alan Laubenstein is to review issues and concerns of the after school athletic program at Parker. The agenda will include a discussion surrounding the development of a mission statement for the athletic program, a look at potential fundraising, and time to address other issues and concerns. It is hoped that a parent representative from every Parker sport team including soccer, cross-country, basketball, skiing, baseball, softball and track and field would attend this meeting. We have a strong, developing program and need to address the issues that result from such expansion. Your input is appreciated. If you are interested in joining this group, but cannot attend this initial meeting, contact either Ben or Alan at the school.

FROM THE TRANSITION OFFICE

The Junior Class will be venturing out to U. Mass Amherst and Hampshire College on Wednesday, January 29th from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. The purpose of the trip is to introduce students to a very large, public university and a small, private and non-traditional school. Students will gain an understanding about how to "view" schools in general and the kinds of

questions to ask when they tour schools. This should help them prepare for the visits they will be doing on their own this spring, summer and next fall.

We are invited to formal tours of both schools and an information session at each.

The cost of the trip will be $15, and students will need to bring lunch because there may be no time to stop for this during this busy day. Financial Aid is available through Mary Ann Gapinski or Sue Whalley.

Permission slips have been distributed and will need to be returned by next Friday to the student's advisor. Please email me with any questions or concerns: swhalley@parker.org .

Would anyone like to come along? We still need a few chaperones!

FROM THE SCHOOL MANAGER

Information about School Photographs

School pictures will be taken on Tuesday, January 28. We will be using LifeTouch Studios. Watch for more information next week!

Applications for private schools and special programs: When Parker students apply for admission to a private school or special program, we receive requests for transcripts, letters of recommendation, and copies of assessments. We ask that you help us by following the following process:

Please allow four weeks for Parker School to complete and mail the materials requested. If you are applying to more than one school or program, please have all the forms and envelopes ready at the same time, if possible.

If individual teachers must write and mail recommendations, please ask those teachers if they are willing and able to write a recommendation. Provide a stamped, addressed business-size envelope for each individual recommendation. Fill in your name, address, and any other requested information on the recommendation form. Remember to give the teacher at least four weeks to complete this task. Each private school has different requirements for mailing recommendations so please read the directions carefully. If the recommendations are all to be mailed together from Parker, please list for us the teachers whom you have asked.

You must sign any transcript request and fill in all requested information. Bring all materials to the Parker office addressed to the attention of Pat Tuzzolo, school manager. Include $5.00 per application for our printing and mailing costs. We will supply the proper envelope for mailing the transcript and other school materials.
