Friday Announcements: June 13th, 2003

Friday Announcement Archives

Dear Parker Families,

Our school is filled with flowers: vases and vases of peonies, lupine, poppies, irises, columbine, daisies, delphinium, roses and more. The place looks beautiful with the remnants and reminders of Graduation still in place. Where our students cleaned and put a shine to their classrooms, and our staff, led by David and James, pitched in in ways uncommon to most schools, our parents took the building to the next level of beauty as they arranged container after container with the flowers grown in the yards of our families. I have seen no other ceremonies so lovingly prepared and provided than our Parker Commencements. No florist could create the scene that the members of our Graduation committee created here, as they tirelessly and cheerfully tended what is now our tradition, of a home-grown Commencement.

Our school never looks so good as it does when our students are presenting themselves. Our graduates of the Class of 2003 demonstrated once again last evening, through their speeches and the presentation of their class gift of the Peace Flag, and through the ways they presented themselves at the culmination of their Parker experience, exactly who they are and how they have become. It is with great admiration and tremendous affection that we congratulate the members of the Class of 2003 and their families one more time.

Please Help!!!

With all the year-end projects and Gateways occurring, students have been running through our supply of one inch binders and sheet protectors. If you can help in our restocking, it would be greatly appreciated.

Do those volunteer hours really count? Does Parker really keep track of volunteer hours? Yes, we do. Every year in our Annual Report we tell the whole world how great our parents are – AND how many hours they give to our school. Even if you have not responded to these requests all year, there is still time for you to report your Volunteer Hours! Please fill in the form at the back of these Friday Announcements, with an estimate of how many hours you have contributed. You can even project ahead to the end of June! Can’t remember if you have responded this year? Telephone Bridgit and she can check. You may also simply telephone the school (24 hours a day!) and leave your volunteer hours report on the answering machine. Thanks, so much!

BECKETT CHIMNEY CORNERS YMCA – October 8 – 10, 2003

June 2, 2003

Dear students and families:

It’s time for another adventure! Two years ago in October, Division 1 students and their advisors packed their bags, gathered their clothes and cameras and went for an expedition to Beckett Chimney Corners YMCA Outdoor Center in Beckett, Massachusetts to learn about the outdoors and create a community within the division. It was so successful we’re doing it again this fall, October 8 – 10, 2003!

This outdoor setting will provide a variety of exciting team building and problem-solving activities (for example, Alpine tower, low ropes course, and other initiatives) that address important community issues. We will focus on the importance of trust, communication, cooperation, conflict resolution, and personal/ group responsibility. These shared experiences among students and staff will be the building blocks of strong Division One relationships.

Students will be staying in rustic (no electricity) cabins that sleep a student/adult ratio of twelve to two. There are separate shower houses for males and females, and a dining room that will serve all our meals. Activities will be led by experienced trained staff at the camp, and a registered nurse will be on site. The cost is $180 per student, and includes all food and travel expenses. In order to pay for a substantial deposit, we are requesting that all families contribute $75 as a down payment by Friday, June 13. The final payment is due by registration, Thursday, August 28.

Please do not allow money to be an issue for any student who wishes to participate. There is scholarship money available and you may apply confidentially by contacting Mary Ann Gapinski, the school nurse.

Sincerely,

Division One

DIVISION III UPDATE

Congratulations to The Class of 2003!! And thanks to all who helped make the ceremony wonderful.

Classes ended for Division Three today. On Monday, all juniors will head to Vermont for the Junior Retreat. For interested parents, there is a link on the Parker website with more information, including directions to Vermont Academy. Any students not going on the retreat (and Division Two students in Division Three classes) will be working on a special three-day project with March Schrader for the time we are away.

Massachusetts State Automobile Charitable Foundation

In the next week, parents of Parker Division 3 students will be receiving an announcement in the mail concerning a program sponsored by the Massachusetts State Automobile Charitable Foundation. This Association is sponsoring a Student Safe Driving Program 2003 at a reduced rate for interested Parker students. The program is administered by instructors from Stevens Advanced Driver Training. This half-day training program is scheduled to be held in Ayer during the months of July and August. More information will be available with the brochure you will be receiving in the mail. If you have further questions contact either Zack Berger, Parker student, or Mary Ann Gapinski, Wellness Coordinator at the school.

MATH, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (MST) UPDATE

Division I MST

Winding down the year is truly a joy when there are plant pots to paint and spinner games to play. Each class and every student is using this time in our last few classes to complete our plant unit, to polish our portfolios and to learn some more about probablility. (No new COWs are due.)

Division II MST

Congratulations Gatewayers! Bridge Fest 2003 continues. The bridge testing ceremony will be Monday, June 16. The winners will receive fabulous prizes!

Be sure to hand in all Cookie Factories, Year End Projects and completed portfolios to avoid the Big Bummer!

ARTS & HUMANITIES (A/H) UPDATE

Division I A/H

In addition to working on revising assessments, finishing up incomplete work, and on putting together year-end portfolios, students have been creating cultures, and have been reading myths from other cultures this week. Year end portfolios are due on Monday, June 16. Any students who are missing work on the last day of school, and / or who have not handed in a complete year end portfolio will be sent to "The Big Bummer," a work-intensive alternative to "The Big End," Parker's school wide day of fun. There is no in-class work time scheduled for next week, so students should finish any work at home this weekend.

Division II A/H

This week marked the passage of many fine students from Division II to Division III A/H. To all our hard workers we give hearty congratulations! Our remaining students this week had the opportunity and requirement to finish off all revisions for the year. They also attended many of the gateways and asked wonderful questions of their peers. As we move into the final days next week, students have the last requirements of completing a reflection letter, filling out a year-end evaluation, and appropriately storing their portfolios. That’s all!

WELLNESS UPDATE

Alan’s Wellness Classes

In Alan's classes, students chose physical activities for these last few days of school. This has included capture the flag, four square, rope swing, softball, soccer and dodge-ball. We finished our unit on Sexuality this week with a game of Jeopardy with sexuality related questions. Next week, students will complete an end of year course/teacher evaluation for Wellness.

Deborah’s Wellness Classes

What a wonderful year! We wound down our Sexuality unit with Jeopardy. Students enjoyed working together in small groups outwitting each other about male and female anatomy, childbirth, STI's and contraception. With the interruption of gateways, our physical activity days have been spent in 4-square play offs! THERE ARE A NUMBER OF STUDENTS MISSING WORK, THEY WILL ATTEND THE BIG BUMMER AND JEOPARDIZE THEIR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF WELLNESS IF THEY DO NOT COMPLETE THIS WORK BY MONDAY.

Katie’s Wellness Classes

This week in Katie's Wellness classes the majority of the students wrapped up the sexuality education unit by playing a rowdy, but educational, game of Jeopardy. Block 1.1 culminated the Sexuality unit by discussing disease prevention. Due to time constraints they will not be able to play Jeopardy next week. Next week students will complete their health-portfolio cover sheets laying out their assessments in all Health projects. They will also complete a short evaluation of the Sexuality Education unit as well as an overall Wellness curriculum evaluation. On Tuesday students will have the choice to determine what group activity games they would like to participate in.

Ian’s Wellness Classes

Ian's Wellness classes enjoyed our last few days together with a few nature walks as well as some of our favorite group games.

SPORTS UPDATE

All Baseball, Softball, and Track Athletes:

Please remember to turn your uniforms in to your coach as soon as your season is over!

FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE

Any parents who have children that routinely take medication at the school nurse’s office or have any medication stored in the school nurse’s office will need to pick up that medication prior to the end of school. You can do this a few days ahead of time and leave only enough medication to complete this final semester. All medications left after the last day of school will be destroyed. Your child will be given a reminder before school ends to give to you about this requirement. If your child is on a medication during the school year that they will not be taking during the summer months, you may call Mary Ann and authorize her to throw away any remaining medication. Remember that your child will need to be seen by their physician and a new authorization form for medication administration will be needed for your child to resume this medication, if ordered, for the next school year. Parents, please be sure to schedule these appointments for June or July so that you are not caught in the last minute rush at your doctor’s office and unable to get an appointment until after school begins. Any questions or concerns, please contact Mary Ann.

CAFÉ WEDNESDAY

The last Café Wednesday of the year is coming! Wednesday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. marks our fourth and final Café Wednesday extravaganza. Come and see students and teachers from every domain and division raise the roof while munching on the finest of donated goodies, your only price of admission. What a bargain! What a show!

FRANK’S UPDATE

As we approach the end of the school year, I really want to thank all the people who gave us help and support in our efforts to bring a food service program to Parker. I especially want to thank all those parents who gave their time and energy in the kitchen as volunteers - I really enjoyed working with you all! And many thanks to Jarrett Man, former Parker student and superior "Kitchen Aide" for helping in the kitchen the last few weeks of this year!

We'll keep you posted as we begin planning for next year's program. Feedback from this year may be sent to me at karenh@parker.org . Suggestions for next year's offerings are always welcome.

Next week, being a short week and the end of the school year, we will be offering lunch on Monday and Tuesday only:

Monday - cold pasta salad $2.00

Tuesday - Homemade Pan Pizza $1.00 per slice

We will also be offering the regular items, until we run out of them.

Thanks for a great year!

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

Attention to anyone who sang with the Chorus this year... Please return your black folders and/or music to Martha in Room 16 as soon as possible. These items were donated by the Parker Essential Fund, (thank you PEF!), and we would like to be able to use them again. Thanks, Martha

To Division 2 and Division 1 students who had Martha and Laura last year...

The grand unraveling of the African-American class quilts is coming! If you would like to keep your quilt square, you will be able to come and snip it off the quilts on the Big End day. I will lay the quilts out on the grass (weather permitting) so you can come to snip off your personal masterpieces! Please be sure to look for the class quilts that day. In case of rain, I will keep you apprised of where to go to collect your square. They served us well during the NEASC inspection and another public event! Thank you for your patience in keeping them together as a whole quilt. Martha
