Division 2 Spanish Gateway

The primary goal of the Spanish program at Parker is to provide instruction in Spanish language and culture that will enable our students to communicate effectively and respectfully in a culture where Spanish is spoken.

Students seeking to gateway from Division 2 Spanish consistently demonstrate the following habits of mind through their work and effort in and out of class:

 Students will be considered for the Division 2 gateway when their work and working habits evidence a strong sense of personal accountability for assigned work, initiative in seeking help and utilizing learning resources in and out of class, and positive contributions to the class community. Students anticipating a Division 2 gateway demonstrate, through their work and work habits, increased autonomy, complexity, and awareness in their approach to the study of Spanish.

 Exit Skills for Division 2 Spanish.

In order to successfully gateway from Division 2 Spanish, student work must show evidence of the following concepts and skills:

•  Consistent development and accuracy in usage and conventions of the language: grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other aspects of the mechanics of the Spanish.

•  Consistent progress in developing accuracy in gender agreement in writing and speaking.

• Continuously evolving, appropriate vocabulary.

• Understanding of sentence structure and increased competence in applications of structural conventions.

• Comprehension of texts studied.

• Consistent growth in critical thinking: students will be able to compare and contrast and hypothesize, speculate, and synthesize what they learn, and connect it to a larger world.

• Students will show continuous development as speakers of Spanish.

• Students will demonstrate growth and increased depth in their cultural awareness by providing evidence of their learning and new knowledge of cultural topics studied.

In a complete Division II portfolio, the number of meets-range pieces is distributed among the five skill areas.

The areas of writing and speaking will be a grouped requirement, of between 5 and 8 pieces, with 2 to 4 from each area.

The skill area of reading requires 2 to 3 pieces, and listening also 2 to 3 pieces. 

The portfolio must contain 3 pieces eligible for the skill area of culture.
